Every time I make a handmade pipe, I can choose the color I want to color according to my own preferences, which can highlight my unique personality. This is also the reason why I am obsessed with researching pipe staining.

Repair old pipe

In my humble opinion, if you have a pipe that has been with you for many years, then painting and repairing it is also a perfect choice. In 2012, I purchased a MUXIANG handmade pipe, which has stayed with me for many years. It means a lot to me. Although it has many broken places, I still can't bear to throw it away. But when I learned how to color the pipe, I used this method to repair it perfectly. If you want to repair your own old pipe, We definitely recommend using them.

When many people dye their pipes, they usually choose Food coloring, Leather dye, or Wood stain, but in my opinion, leather dye is the best choice. I recommend using Fiiblings, because Fiiblings provide a very rich range of color options, from light to dark, and this dye can penetrate deep into the grain of the wood, making the color look natural and vivid. Now let's start staining our pipe.

Before diving into the process of staining a briar pipe, we also need to do some treatment on the surface of the pipe to ensure the best staining effect

1. Cleaning:
You can use various cleaning tools, including a soft cloth or brush, and a specialized pipe cleaner. if you still don’t know how, please read our article on how to clean a pipe. We won’t explain it in detail in this blog. The cleaned pipe can improve the adhesion of the dye to the surface.

2. Sanding: We can use sandpaper (about 400-600 mesh) sand along the direction of the heather wood grain, sanding the entire surface evenly, helping us eliminate any imperfections

3. Filling: Inspect the briar pipe for any visible flaws such as pits or small cracks. At this time, you can take some wood blocks of similar color and texture to repair.

4. Polishing a pipe: After filling and drying, we can use Briar Wood Polish for polishing. My favorite here is Savinelli Briar Radica Pipe Polish. Its polishing effect is not only excellent, but it also contains pine resin ingredients that can penetrate and replenish the oils in the briar wood, nourishing the material.

Applying The Stain To Your Briar Pipe

Once you have prepared your briar pipe for staining by sanding and cleaning it thoroughly, it's time to apply the stain.

We use a soft foam or velvet brush to apply the stain, avoid brushes that will leave scratches on the wood surface.

Start applying from the bottom of the pipe
First apply a layer of stain on the bottom of the pipe, then work upwards.

Apply along the wood grain
Apply the stain following the natural wood grain of the briar, this will create the most natural color penetration.

Maintain continuity while applying
Apply stain continuously over each area, don't stop midway, to avoid uneven coloring.

Apply gently and evenly
Use a light hand to apply the stain, ensure even penetration into the wood.

Apply multiple coats
To achieve ideal coloring, apply multiple coats until the desired richness is reached.

Remove excess stain
Once done, use a clean soft cloth to wipe away any excess liquid stain

When you complete the above operations, I think you will also get a perfect pipe like me. This picture below shows what my successfully stained pipe looks like.
